Roche Medals in 40th Mid-Amateur Qualifying at Cobblestone Creek
LAWRENCE, N.J. – Sixteen players recorded a round of 75 or better on Monday at the qualifier for the 40th New Jersey Mid-Amateur Championship at Cobblestone Creek Country Club. Brandon Roche earned medalist honors carding a one-over par 71 in the third and final Mid-Amateur qualifying round.
“I was able to give myself a lot of good looks with wedges into the greens and putted really well,” said Roche. “I was able to get aggressive with my lines and I made a few longer putts early to get it going.”
Roche remained steady and was able to limit the damage where some of the rest of the field struggled on the day. In fact, Roche was the lone player in the field to birdie the par four, 9th on the afternoon.
“I haven’t played Cobblestone Creek before, but you can certainly get into some trouble off the tee. I hit a lot of three irons today off the tee,” said Roche. “I wasn’t sure what the number would be to qualify but knew if I could avoid big numbers and hit fairways that I would have a good chance.”
Matt Castillo of Fountain Greens carded a hole-in-one on the 130-yard, 7th. Castillo shot three-over par, 73 to advance to the major championship thanks in part to his ace.
Qualifiers from Monday’s round will advance to compete in the Mid-Amateur Championship which will be held at Deal Golf & Country Club from June 6-8.
