Two teams share medal in Four-Ball Qualifying at Mercer Oaks
WEST WINDSOR, NEW JERSEY – Two teams, the duo of Drake Ferriter and Matthew Carlson, and the tandem of Michael Guli and John Probst, both shot a matching seven-under-par 65 to claim co-medalist honors today in the final of three qualifying rounds for the 89th New Jersey State Golf Association Four-Ball Championship at the par-72, 6,789 yard Mercer Oaks (West) Golf Course in West Windsor. Ferriter and Carlson (32-33), as well as Guli and Probst (also 32-33) have led a total of eleven teams into the championship proper which will be held at Galloway National Golf Club May 18-20.
Speaking on behalf of his team, Ferriter explained their motivation. “After last year where we missed the cut by one, we came in with a bit of a chip on our shoulders. We came out firing and played very team-oriented golf,” stated Ferriter, age 24 of Ramsey and NJSGA E-Club member. He and the 23-year-old Carlson (also of Ramsey and member of Ramsey Golf and Country Club) had no blemishes on their score card and were bolstered by seven birdies.
The story was very much the same for Guli, 54 of Lebanon, and Probst, the 44-year-old resident of Parsippany, as they also fashioned seven birdies and no bogeys. Efficiency was the order of the day for the team – both are members of Essex County Country Club. “It was a pretty stress-free round. We were never in trouble and kept two balls in play. The course was great, and it was just an easy round of golf, stated Guli.
Groupings and starting times for the 89th Four-Ball Championship will be announced in the coming days, and track scoring and statistics during the championship at NJSGA.org and across the NJSGA’s social media channels.
