Thomas Lee Fires 7-under 65 to Medal in Amateur Qualifier at Quail Brook
SOMERSET, N.J. – Thomas Lee fired an impressive 7-under 65 at Quail Brook Golf Course on Saturday to earn medalist honors at the New Jersey State Amateur Qualifier.
“I was playing good golf coming in,” explained Thomas Lee following his round. “It was good to see everything come together. I played really well on the par 5s. I birdied every one and eagled one. That was my 5-under and then I made a couple birdies coming in. I played really well.”
Lee carded a whopping six birdies and an eagle on the par-72 golf course. He recorded just one blemish in his round, coming on the 415-yard par 4 5th hole.
"Hitting my tee ball good and positioning with the angles. I think yesterday (a practice round) helped a lot," said Lee. "Knowing where to miss with my length. Knowing what clubs to hit off the tee definitely helped with the strategy today."
Later in the morning, Doug Ergood threatened Thomas Lee, carding birdies at 12, 13 and 14 to head into the final stretch at 5-under. The University of North Carolina student-athlete finished even the rest of the way to card a 5-under 67 and finished in second.
The low 12 players and ties have advanced to the 120th Amateur Championship presented by Provident Bank, which will take place on July 6-8 at Essex Fells Country Club.
