Steenland Mother-Son Duo Win 55th Mixed Pinehurst Championship
SKILLMAN, N.J. – The mother-son duo of Doreen and Ben Steenland won the 55th New Jersey State Golf Association Mixed Pinehurst Championship on Thursday afternoon at Cherry Valley Country Club. The pair fired four birdies to turn in a 1-under 71.
"It feels great," Doreen Steenland said. "This is my second time playing with my son. We were just able to hold it together and stay strong. We've been playing golf together since he's been a toddler, but this is our first official win as a team, so it feels really good.”
Graham and Julie Nelson won the overall net division as well as the net senior flight, shooting a 4-over 76 with a 10-under net score. Most notably, Julie recorded a hole-in-one on her very first hole, which was No. 14.
"It was a pretty straight shot," Nelson refelecting on the hole-in-one. "My husband went in the bunker, so my goal was to get it on the green. I tried to aim for the left side, and it went on the left side. We couldn't see it go in, so we weren't quite sure where it was when we got up to the green, but we found it in the cup."
