Spring Lake GC Welcomes Senior Amateur Championship
SPRING LAKE, N.J. – The 65th New Jersey Senior Amateur Championship presented by NJM Insurance Group is set to get underway at Spring Lake Golf Club on Tuesday, September 26 and run through the 27.
It will be the first time in 29 years that the Senior Amateur will visit the Jersey Shore staple. Also home to the 1998 and 1986 New Jersey Open, Spring Lake will provide tough test of golf to 132 male golfers aged 55 and above.
The championship is set for Tuesday and Wednesday when the 36-hole, stroke-play tournament is played over the par-72, 6,200 yard venue. After the completion of 18 holes, the field is cut to the low 40 scorers plus ties for the final round.
2022 Senior Amateur Champion Morten Gotterup highlights the 132 player field. Last year, Gotterup, 56, bested the field by three strokes at Navesink Country Club. He came from behind to claim the C.H. Smith Trophy after carding an exciting 1-over par 72 throughout the windy day, giving him a total of 4-over par 146 through the 36 hole championship.
Also in the field are six former champions in Adam Armagost (2021) Norman Lewis (2019), Anthony Fioretti (2018), Bill Charpek (2015, 17), Jay Blumenfeld (2016, 14) and Tom Dicinti (2010). Blumenfled, a decorated amateur player also won the Super-Senior Championship twice and is coming off a runner-up finish in the 2023 edition of the championship. Lou Taylor of Spring Lake joins Blumenfeld in the field as a Super-Senior Champion, age 65 and above.

Spring Lake Golf Club will be well represented at the Senior Amateur as six competitors will seek a victory at their home club.
The Jersey Shore gem is celebrating its 125th anniversary this season. Founded in 1898, originally as a 9-hole golf course, Spring Lake purchased 30 more acres of land a decade later in order to construct the 18-hole layout. The course was an early design in the career of George C. Thomas, Jr., who went on to enduring fame after moving to California, where he created Riviera and Los Angeles CC, among others. Spring Lake was his only project in the Garden State. Shortly after, in 1918, esteemed golf course architect A. W. Tillinghast led the club in a reconstruction project, which left a lasting impression on the course for years to come.
The club is welcoming its fifth Senior Amateur Championship and 17th NJSGA championship overall, previously hosting the Open (1986, 1998), Women’s Amateur (1991), Mid-Amateur (2008, 2016), Senior Amateur (1964, 1966, 1968, 1994), Senior Open (1994, 2001), Women’s Senior (1977, 1995, 2009), Pre-Senior (1968, 1994) and the Mixed Pinehurst (1983).
