Somerset County Conducts First Women's Championship
A field of 84 women participated in the first Warrenbrook Women’s Golf Association Women’s Tournament in conjunction with the Somerset County Parks Commission on Friday, July 31, at Warrenbrook Golf Course in Warren Township.
The event was the brainchild of Course Manager Bill McCallum, who said, “We wanted a county championship that was unique for women. This event will annually crown the women’s county tournament champion.”
Champions were crowned in three separate flights, with Stableford scoring employed.
Overall champion was Charleen Szenyi, who also won the Second Flight. First Flight winner was Yun Negri while Dian Munson won Third Flight.
“We started by opening it the women in the county who play in the adult leagues, and then we opened it to all women who play in interclub leagues, and then friends of friends. Next year, we envision it being open to all women in the state, ages 18 and above,” McCallum said.
“We’re very pleased with the way the tournament got off the ground and ran so smoothly. All of the players got off like clockwork,” said Marcy Rodrigues, tournament co-chair along with Carol Hartlove.
McCallum also congratulated course superintendent Tammy Stephens for the superb course conditioning.
“We paid extra attention to detail around the green. We doubt-cut and rolled them early this morning,” said Stephens, the only female superintendent among the five Somerset County courses and one of a handful in the state.
