Schiavone Cup Set For Sept. 25-26 At Forsgate Country Club
Forsgate Country Club has announced that the Sixth annual R.A. Schiavone Memorial Cup will take place Sept. 25-26 at the Monroe Township facility, which is owned and operated by RDC Golf Group Inc.
The two-day pro-senior stroke play tournament, which is contested on Forsgate’s 6,904-yard, par-71 Banks Course, is sanctioned by both the New Jersey PGA Section and the New Jersey State Golf Association.
The Schiavone Cup is named in honor of longtime Garden State golf course owner/investor Ronald A. Schiavone.
“This event honors a man who contributed to golf in New Jersey, even though he was not a golfer himself. As a founder of the state’s largest country club, the 54-hole Fiddler’s Elbow, and primary owner of Forsgate Country Club for more than a decade, Ron Schiavone provided the entrepreneurial vision that helped elevate the quality of the game in the Garden State,” said Christopher Schiavone. “My introduction to golf and my education in the club business – from summer jobs at the clubs he owned to assisting him in its management – are owed to him, and I thought it fitting that an event should be created in his honor.”
Open to senior (50 and over) amateur players and golf professionals of any age, the event begins on September 25 with 18 holes of stroke play for the senior amateur players. On September 26, the senior amateurs will return to the club with the professional joining them in a team match concurrent with the second round of the individual amateur medal play. On that day, while competing as a team, the pros will also be participating in an Individual Pro Medal Play Championship, featuring a $5,000 purse ($2,000 first place). A steak and lobster dinner and awards presentation will cap off the tournament activities.
“A fan of the individual amateur competition, my father recognized that the over-50 golfer was a big contributor to his business, and he would be pleased with an event that focused on that group of golfers,” added Schiavone.
The entry fee for this event is $300 and includes both days for Senior Amateur and Professional. The field is limited to 60 teams. For more information or to register a team, contact Mike Furey or Carolyn McKenzie Andrews at 732-656-8953
