122nd U.S. Amateur Championship Underway in New Jersey

PARAMUS, N.J. – The first round of the 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship has concluded at both The Ridgewood Country Club and stroke play co-host Arcola Country Club on Monday and 312 of the best amateur golfers in the nation teed it up in the Garden State.

U.S. Amateur Qualifying at Canoe Brook CC: Three Punch Their Tickets to the 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship

Andres Acevedo, a former Seton Hall University standout finished with a 1-under par 69 on Monday at Arcola. William O’Neill of Morristown and Rhett Sellers, an incoming junior at Rutgers University notched a pair of solid rounds, carding a 2-over par 72 at Arcola. The duo sit at t-51 overall. 

Also at Arcola, 2020 New Jersey Amateur Champion Austin Devereux and Jersey City’s Matthew Mattare carded a 77 (+7) and 78 (+8), respectively.

At Ridgewood, Mark Costanza, 2020 New Jersey Open Champion and 2021 U.S. Mid-Amateur finalist had a solid day, turning in an even par 35 on the front nine before an uneven back nine, highlighted by a birdie on No. 16, a 431-yard par 4. The 33 year old shot a 3-over par 74 on Monday and currently sits t-78 overall. 

Dougie Ergood of Mount Laurel rounds out the Garden State competitors, carding a 5-over par 76 at Ridgewood.

The New Jersey State Golf Association is set to bring live coverage of O’Neill as he tees off No. 1 at Ridgewood in his second round of stroke play at 12:35 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Follow @NJSGA1900 on Instagram to catch the live action.

Following 36 holes of stroke play, the top 64 players will advance to match play.
