Ron Vannelli Wins Super-seniors National Event
Ron Vannelli of Forsgate, the NJSGA 2015 Senior Player of the Year, has been a member of the Society of Seniors for 10 years, and this week played in his first competition with that national association.
He came through as a winner, carding a 71-69-75-215 to win the Super Senior Division (65 and over) of the Society of Seniors Masters Championship at Indian Wells Resort in Indian Wells, Calif.
Vannelli won by four strokes over Joey Vasquez of Aledo, Texas.
In the Senior Division, former Bergen County resident and Alpine member Adam Kugler, who now resides in LaQuinta, Calif., was tied for fifth with a 217 behind champion Steve Hudson of Alabama, who shot 210. Billy Charpek of Navesink, the 2015 NJSGA Senior Amateur champions was 19th at 224.
“it’s great to win, of course. It’s nice to still be able to compete at this age,” said Vannelli, who will serve as captain for the New Jersey team in Wednesday’s Compher Cup matches vs. Philadelphia at Metedeconk National.
“It was beautiful place. The greens were great. It played a little short at 6,200- 6,300 yard, but it was good for me. I drove it in the fairway almost every hole. I hit my irons good, but missed a bunch of birdie putts. I had only one double bogey , on the 17thhole of my final round, but I had pretty much wrapped up the tournament by then.”
