Roeder and Henry Share Lead at 64th Senior Amateur Championship presented by NJM Insurance Group
RED BANK, N.J. – The opening round of the 64th Senior Amateur Championship presented by NJM Insurance Group took place Monday as 85 golfers competed to be the remaining 25 (+ ties) in Tuesday’s final round. It was a cool, windy fall day at Navesink Country Club, but that didn’t stop the senior amateurs from carding some impressive scores.
Joseph Roeder of Little Mill Country Club and Bill Henry Jr. of Morris County Golf Club both carded a 2-over par 73 on the 6,187-yard course to set the pace.
“Greens are very tough to make putts on,” said Roeder. “I hit the ball good, if I count fringes, I hit 16 greens. I also struck the ball well.”
Roeder recorded four bogeys and two birdies to bring him to his total.
“Same game plan tomorrow, fairways and greens and stay below the pins. Try to limit the three putts, but that’s hard to do,” said Roeder of tomorrow’s strategy.
Henry, 58, notched five birdies on his scorecard. The leaders will begin their final round at 10:06 a.m.
The remaining 30 competitors will be back at Navesink Tuesday morning to vie for the C.H. Smith Trophy.
