Randolph Captures 35th NJ Senior Open Championship
WATCHUNG, N.J. – Amateur Trevor Randolph of Arcola Country Club fired an impressive second round, four-under par 68 for a two-round total of nine-under par 135 to win the 35th NJPGA/NJSGA Senior Open Championship at Watchung Valley Golf Club on Wednesday afternoon.
Randolph, who came into day two tied atop the leaderboard with defending champion Frank Esposito at 5-under par 67, followed with the low second round score of the day at 68. Trailing Esposito heading into the par-3 13th, Randolph knocked his tee shot within inches of the hole to jump start a six-hole finish where Randolph made his charge at five-under par to grab the victory.
“I made eagle on the 14th hole, I drove the 15th green and my eagle putt stopped just short but it was great. Just really solid golf,” said Randolph. “I needed to just step up and hit a couple good shots to put some pressure on Frank. I got lucky and things went straight.”
Randolph’s play down the stretch proved to be the difference as some familiarity with an older set of irons helped in his efforts on the course.
“I’ve been playing a new set of irons all spring but on the range yesterday I gave up on them. I went and got the set I’ve been playing for six years out of my trunk. I played with those and I actually hit them better,” said Randolph.
Randolph, who just turned 50 years of age, has seen plenty of success before this as he is a four-time NJSGA Mid-Am Champion as well as an NJSGA Amateur Championship runner-up.
“To win my first event as a senior was really special. Frank is great to play with, we’ve been out on the course together before and I always enjoy his company,” said Randolph. “I’m very thankful and proud to have won.”
Derrick Scenna of Deal Golf & Country Club carded a hole-in-one on the 143-yard 9th hole.
