O'Hagan Medals in Open Qualifier at Lake Mohawk Golf Club
SPARTA, N.J. - Max O’Hagan shot 2-under par 68 to earn medalist honors at the 101st New Jersey State Golf Association Open Championship Qualifier at Lake Mohawk Golf Club Monday in Sparta. Ten players qualified for the championship, which will be held July 19-21 at Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown.
O’Hagan, a former Univeristy of Central Florida golfer, made an eagle and five birdies and was as low as 4-under par during the round.
“I played really nicely,” O’Hagan said. “I had a couple scrappy holes, but all-in-all, it was good.”
O’Hagan kickstarted his round with an eagle at the par 5 third and a birdie at the short par 4 sixth. Making the turn at even par, O’Hagan birdied four of his first six holes on the second nine. He finished with a 2-under par 68.
“I drove the ball really nicely today, and I holed a couple of nice putts,” O’Hagan said. “Some of the par 5s were downwind, so I was able to take advantage of those.”
Nicholas Taylor shot even par 70 to finish solo second. He made three birdies, three bogeys, and 12 pars.
“It was so hot that you just had to stay focused the whole time,” Taylor said. “I’ve played here a bunch and I think I finally learned the course today. The pins were in some tough spots, but I made a few putts and a couple of par saves.”
Tyler Galantini, Niall Handley, and Matthew Scozzari finished tied for third at 2-over par. The top-nine and ties (+5 and better) qualified for the 101st Open Championship.
