LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, N.J. –  Michael O’Connell of Arcola Country Club claimed the W.Y. Dear trophy at the 64th Pre-Senior Championship on Tuesday at Cobblestone Creek Country Club. O’Connell led the scoring on Monday with his 2-under par 68 on the 6,172-yard par 70, and kept his foot on the gas today, shooting 1-over par 71, which proved to be enough for the victory.

“The round wasn't quite as easy as yesterday,” reflected O’Connell. “I had to scramble a little bit, but thankfully chipping was good and my putting was good when it needed to be. To win a New Jersey State Golf Association tournament is really something special. It's always been a goal of mine and I'm thankful that I was able to make it happen.”

On Tuesday, O’Connell was able to claim his first-ever tournament victory playing alongside 2019 champion Peter Kozubal.

“Everybody out here is so great," claimed O'Connell. "I know Peter very well, I very much enjoyed playing with Peter today and I enjoyed playing with Derek yesterday, He's so steady and just like yesterday, I think we kind of fed off each other. When you're able to see your opponent hit good shots it keeps you focused to make sure that the next one you hit good too.”

2021 champion Gregg Angelillo finished as the runner up, carding a 1-under par 69 on Tuesday to notch the low round of the day. In the opening round, Angelillo, of Baltustrol shot a 2-over par.
