North Jersey Wins Best-ball-of-four 3rd Time In 6 Years
With Rich Forlenza firing a one-over-par 73 on his own ball, the team from North Jersey Country Club won the NJSGA Best-Ball-of-Four Championship for the third time in six years .
Forlenze, Erv Alliaghi, Charlie Kohut and Paul Samanchik combined for a net 56 to win by three shots (match of cards) over the Black Oak team of Todd Typrowicz, Danny May, Joe Galayda and Michael Deo. The event took place on August 14 at Cherry Valley Country Club in Skillman.
Third place went to the Flanders Valley family group of Todd, Scott, Ross and Pat Egan, who also shot 59. Taking fourth place at 60 (match of cards) were Maplewood’s foursome of Bill Dahm, Phil Henderson , Scott Friedman and David Rosenthal over Stan Culp, Glenn Garofano, Greg Peil and Steve Ashton of Wallkill...
“I drove the ball great today. I missed only two fairways all day,” said Forlenza, 62, an insurance broker who carries a five handicap. Forlenza had three natural birdies on holes nine, 10, and eight. “We’ve been playing together for a long time. It helps.”
Kohut totaled six net birdies.
“I putted, chipped and drove it well,” said Kohut, 63, a 13 handicap who works in residential construction. “We have good chemistry. I won this in 2005 when I was a member at Montclair. But this team has better chemistry. Everybody knows their part.”
Allaghi chipped in with three net birdies.
“We play well to our handicaps,” said Allaghi, who carries a 14 handicap and works in new construction. “I’ve been playing with Charlie for 40 years and with Paul for 30 years.”
Samanchik, who was also on North Jersey’s winning team in 1984, added two net birdies.
“We know each other’s games. I’ve been playing with Rich every weekend for almost 30 years,” said Samanchik, 70, a 17-handicap who is a financial planner. “WE enjoy each other’s company.”
