NJSGA News In Brief For January, 2015
NJSGA & SOUTH JERSEY GOLF ASSOCIATION FORM STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIP
The New Jersey State Golf Association has entered into a strategic relationship with the South Jersey Golf Association in an effort to maximize playing opportunities for golfers, both young and old, throughout the Garden State.
The mutually beneficial relationship will enable members of each golf association to participate in each other’s championships. Members of the SJGA may also participate in NJSGA Member Golf Days.
As part of the collaborative effort, each website (NJSGA.org and SJGOLF.org) will link to the other, allowing access for membership opportunities and tournament participation.
“We’re looking to support their efforts and give golfers in South Jersey an idea what the New Jersey State Golf Association has to offer such as Member Golf Days and our championship schedule,” said NJSGA president Frank O’Brien. “At the same time, we are enabling our members an opportunity to play in the SJGA events.”
The partnership has been in the formative stages for two years. Last summer, on a trial basis, members of the SJGA participated in an NJSGA Member Golf Day at Trump National-Philadelphia in Pine Hill, N.J., while NJSGA members took part in the SJGA’s Fall Classic Invitational at Atlantic City Country Club.

SOMERSET HILLS PARTNERS FIND WAY TO USGA FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
A pair of young New Jersey golfers and college buddies, both out of Somerset Hills, decided just before the deadline last summer that they would compete in a qualifier for the inaugural USGA Men’s Four-Ball Championship that will be conducted this May at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
For Conor Casey, a resident of Madison, it was nothing new for him to compete in a USGA event, although he had never advanced past the qualifying stage at any of them. For Griffin Kern, a native of Summit, it was completely different.
Kern had never participated in another beyond a club member-member event , yet the pair decided that they would go forward on their plan. The only U.S. Four-Ball qualifier that met their schedules was on Thursday, October 16 at Cherry Valley Country Club in Garden City, N.Y.
Because the championship takes place in the spring, most of the qualifying was conducted during late summer in the prior year. Thirteen more qualifiers are scheduled in warm climates this February and March.

CALIENDO WINTER GOLF LEAGUE GOING STRONG IN 54th SEASON
The temperature was hovering around the freezing mark when 87 golfers in the John Caliendo Jersey Shore Winter Golf League teed off in a shotgun start on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015 at the Suneagles Golf Club in Tinton Falls.
When all the golfing was done, Lou Fulgoni of Toms River was the low amateur at 78, three shots clear of the field, Mike Estabrook was the low net at 73, one shot better than George Policastro, Dan Price, Pat McMorrow and Joe Anderson. And Baker Maddera was low pro at 76, two shots clear of Stu Blasius and Todd Rickenbach.
Some players had come from as far away as upstate New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware to participate. All had paid the $40 greens fee, with the pros adding another $30 on top to vie for a cash prize.
The winter of 2014-15 marks the 54th year of the Caliendo League which is going strong. All 160 membership spots at $125 apiece for newcomers and $75 for returnees have long since been sold. The group plays every Thursday from October 30 through to the championship on April 2.

RENOVATIONS TO FIVE BERGEN COUNTY PUBLIC COURSES COMPLETED
A 13-year renovation of five Bergen County public golf courses has been completed with the final touches taking place at Valley Brook Golf Course in River Vale.
The relationship between the Northeast Golf Company, led by architect Robert McNeil (ASGCA) and Bergen County Golf Courses, headed by former general manager Kevin Purcell, began with a small tee renovation at Rockleigh Golf Course in 2001.
In the fall of 2014, the work at Valley Brook was finished by Turco Golf, completing an 81-hole, five-course renovation.
On Jan. 1, Purcell became executive director of the New Jersey State Golf Association.
The work at Valley Brook was precipitated by the desire to develop a bunker style that was more maintainable for the limited municipal staff while also presenting a bold flowing style. The work included solving a variety of drainage problems on holes that simply rendered the golf course unplayable following rain events.
The project was a team effort between Turco Golf under the creative direction of McNeil, the daily oversight of golf course superintendent Gary Arlio and the management of Purcell. The project was well received by the County and the playing public.
