NJSGA Finishes Behind WGA in 96th Stoddard Trophy Match

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The 96th Stoddard Trophy Match was won by the host, the Westchester Golf Association at the Country Club of Fairfield on Thursday afternoon. The New Jersey State Golf Association finished in second, just four points behind Westchester. 

Scoring

This one-day triangular match play event between the New Jersey State Golf Association, Westchester Golf Association, and Long Island Golf Association features six alternate-shot, two-player team matches in the morning and 12 singles contests in the afternoon.

The NJSGA team, made up of 12 Garden State competitors, led after the morning foursome matches with a total of 8.5 points to the WGA’s 3.5 points and the LIGA’s 6 points. The tandems of Jack Wall and Troy Vannucci, Trevor Randolph and Chris DeJohn, and Will O’Neill and Cole Ekert won both of their matches against Westchester and Long Island.

The NJSGA was bested in the afternoon as they were edged by the WGA, 9 to 3 in the singles matches. DeJohn and Cameron Bell won both of their singles contests over the WGA and the LIGA.

The event began in 1922 at Morris County Golf Club and was won by the Westchester Golf Association. The NJSGA won for the first time the following year at Lido Country Club, the first of its series-leading 43 victories. Both the WGA and LIGA have won the trophy 24 times, and the trophy has been shared by way of a tie four times.
