NJSGA Defeats LIGA at 97th Stoddard Trophy Match
MANHASSET, N.Y. - The 97th Stoddard Trophy Match hosted by Deepdale Golf Club and the Long Island Golf Association was won by the defending champions, the Westchester Golf Association. The New Jersey State Golf Association finished in second, just 4.5 points behind Westchester for the second-straight season.
This one-day triangular match play event between the New Jersey State Golf Association, Westchester Golf Association, and Long Island Golf Association features six alternate-shot, two-player team matches in the morning and 12 singles contests in the afternoon.
The NJSGA team, made up of 12 Garden State competitors, defeated team LIGA in the morning foursome matches. The tandems of Will O'Neill and Anthony Campanile, Conor Casey and Cole Ekert, and Patil Wilson and Jack Wall won their matches against Long Island. Casey and Ekert garnered points in their match against Westchester, too.
The NJSGA bested both squads in the afternoon singles matches, defeating WGA, 7-5 and LIGA, 6.5-5.5, although it wasn't enough to capture the Stoddard Trophy.
The event began in 1922 at Morris County Golf Club and was won by the Westchester Golf Association. The NJSGA won for the first time the following year at Lido Country Club, the first of its series-leading 43 victories.
