NJSGA Conducts Tournament Committee Workshop At Canoe Brook
The NJSGA’s annual Tournament Committee Workshop took place on Wednesday, May 4, at Canoe Brook Country Club.
Some 50 veteran and new officials were in attendance for a power-point presentation by NJSGA Tournament Director Mike McAneny, and Tournament Manager Brad Bardon.
“The workshop discussed the roles and responsibilities of our tournament officials and what are the best practices,” McAneny said. "Officials are ambassdors of the NJSGA and should have a willingness to provide the correct answer to questions in a timely fashion. They are there to assists players.".
The event was also the annual meeting of the NJSGA Tournament Committee.
“For the veteran members, it was a review of existing policies and a refresher. Also discussed were new policies and procedures,” McAneny said. “It was a basic orientation on how to officiate.
“It let the officials know what our expectations are, what are the expectations of the players and also deals with how to represent the NJSGA as an official.”
The event is seen as a supplement to knowledge many of them had already gained from the NJSGA Rules Seminar that was conducted on April 6.
Following the power-point presentation, the attendees disbursed into three groups and discuss 1), Water hazards and lateral water hazards 2), that changes to Rule 18 regarding a ball at rest, and 3), how to determine the the nearest point of relief.
Eric Houseknecht, Tournament Committee chariman, gave an introduction to the meeting. He delineated NJSGA benefit services programs, reviewed NJSGA committees, and also went over the 25 championships for 2016 and highlights of the previous season.
“We’re very happy to have had the event at Canoe Brook Country Club. Canoe Brook is very supportive of our policies and procedures and the NJSGA will be back here on May to conduct a U.S. Women’s Open qualifier,” McAneny said.
