NJSGA Caddie Scholarship Honors Late Col. John Mchugh

Since the fall of 2010, the NJSGA’s Caddie Scholarship Foundation has awarded the Col. John McHugh Memorial Scholarship in honor of the late career army officer who was killed in 2010 while serving in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Col. McHugh was among 18 people killed May 18, 2010, in a suicide car bomb attack on a military convoy in Kabul.

McHugh, a 46-year-old West Caldwell native, was a married father of five who had recently become a grandfather.

He graduated from James Caldwell High School in 1982 and went on to attend the U.S. Military Academy.

The scholarship in his name awards a caddie from Essex Fells Country Club.

Pictured is Col. McHugh’s brother, Jim McHugh of Forest Hill, with Col. John McHugh Scholarship recipient Jack Rupple, a junior at the University of Maryland.

On Tuesday, December 17, Star-Ledger and NJ.com columnist Mark DiIonno wrote a column about the McHugh family.
