Michael and Tom Hyland Victorious in 100th Father & Son Championship Presented by McRae Capital
JACKSON, N.J. – The 100th Father & Son Championship presented by McRae Capital Management took place Tuesday at Metedeconk National Golf Club. The day concluded with Tom Hyland and his son, Michael taking home the hardware, carding an impressive 2-under par 70 as a team.
The Hyland duo was able to work together to play a consistent round, with only one bogey coming on No. 3, followed by three birdies on holes 6, 8, and 15 to secure the win.
“Very simple. Dad made every putt he looked at.” said Michael when asked about the round. “He hits it about 180 off the tee now he's so old,” Michael joked. “But he had a lot of second shots on the green, and then when he missed the green, I hit it about four feet and he made every one.”
“[Michael] is a really good chipper. When I would miss, usually we would play his drive and I would either hit the green or come close to the green. If I missed the green, he’d chip it up there close.”
Both Tom and Michael are members at Little Mill Golf Club in Marlton, but have managed to see Metedeconk plenty before.
“Both of us love this place. We’ve played here a lot, so we knew the course and it was a lot of fun.”
The format of select drive and alternate shot seemed to play to the strength of the Hyland men.
“I would say we’re dangerous in that format. If we have to play our own ball or a better ball, we might not do as well.”
Additionally, the duo of Kieran Purcell and Pat Purcell took home the glassware for Net Scoring, carding a 4-under par 68.
