Lpga-usga Girls Golf; Drive, Chip & Putt Offered
LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Greater Newark, a division of Renaissance Jr Golf Inc., is a developmental junior golf program for girls ages 7-17. It begins its 2013 season on Saturday, May 22, at the Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth.
LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, for girls living in the Greater Newark area of North and Central Jersey, was formed to create a network for girls to learn to play golf, build friendships and sample competition in a positive and supportive learning environment. The only national initiative of its kind just for girls, the program provides the opportunity to achieve success, progress in golf, and establish a life-long interest in the game.
Junior boys and girls are also encouraged to register for a one-day qualifier in the annual Drive, Chip and Putt Championships, created by the Masters Tournament Foundation, the PGA of America and the United States Golf Association.
Competitors will be comprised of boys and girls ages 7-15 in four age categories: 7-9 years old, 10-11 years old, 12-13 years old, and 14-15 years old. Participants are limited to registering to only one local qualifier, and the deadline to enter is 5 p.m. on April 30. Local qualifying sites include Galloping Hill, Bedens Brook in Skillman , Black Oak in Long Valley and Crestmont in West Orange. To register, visit www.drivechipandputt.com.
Girls involved in LPGA-USGA Girls Golf work with a PGA or LPGA Instructor to learn the basics in rules, etiquette, full swing, short game, and putting. The program helps develop self esteem; provides opportunities and grant responsibilities to girls; provides an incentive to continue to progress and improve the game; creates a network in which girls feel comfortable in golf and teaches an appreciation and love for the game of golf.
The LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Greater Newark, Inc. , also conducts a Pitch and Putt League at Ash Brook Golf Course in Scotch Plains.
The Girls Golf program runs every Wednesday evening, from May 22nd – August 7th, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Galloping Hill. The Pitch and Putt League meets on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. in June and July at Ash Brook.

“Our programs introduce girls to golf and make it fun,” said program director Beverly Harrison. “We’ve grown each year with more girls participating and with more volunteers. This year we are also providing an introductory program for parents who can make good use of their time at the course while they are waiting for their children.”
