Lindholm Sets Course Record, Match Play Bracket Set at 41st Mid-Amateur Championship
SWAINTON, N.J. - Clifford Lindholm of Montclair Golf Club fired a 7-under par 65 to earn medalist honors in the stroke play portion of the 41st Mid-Amateur Championship at Union League National Golf Club. 16 individuals, including three former Mid-Am Champions advanced to stroke play.
With six birdies and one eagle, Lindholm set a course record on the Grant and Sherman routing.
“I wasn’t trying to think about it in the moment,” Lindholm said. “I just hit one good shot after another and kept it going from there.”
With the match play round starting Wednesday morning, Lindholm understands what it takes to keep advancing.
“Tomorrow’s a fresh slate,” said Lindholm. “I’ll be looking to do the same thing as I did today and keep making birdies. That’s the key in match play.”
Austin Devereux of Manasquan River Golf Club finished five strokes behind Lindholm. In his first year eligible in the Mid-Amateur, Devereux shot 2-under par 70 to advance. In 2020, Devereux won the 119th New Jersey Amateur Championship.
The challenging course, which played 6,895 yards did not seem to faze Devereux, completing the day with five birdies.
“It’s unbelievable,” Devereux said of Union League. “The greens are great, the aesthetics with the bunkers and everything like that are just purely amazing.”
The second round of the Mid-Amateur Championship will take place on Wednesday, June 5 beginning at 7:30 a.m. ET at Union League National Golf Course.
