Largest Field Ever For Member Golf Day At Upper Montclair
The Upper Montclair Country Club, site of many LPGA, Champions Tour and NJSGA Championships, played host to the fourth of six NJSGA Member Golf Days with largest field ever in the three-year history of Member Golf Days on Monday, October 7.
The utilization of all three of Upper Montclair nines enabled 117 golfers to register and play in the individual net Stableford competition.
Next Monday’s Member Golf Day at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township is sold out, but spots are open for the final MGD of the season, Monday, October 21 at Rockaway River Country Club in Denville.
Rain squalls were in the area when the golfers teed off at noon, but the weather cleared for most of the afternoon.
“We’ve been very fortunate with the amount of great weather we’ve had for Member Golf Days over the pas three years. We’ve only had to postpone one in that period of time,” said Rich Kennedy, NJSGa Director of Handicapping and Member Services.
“The rain was a bit of a hardship today because we’re used to better weather. But, hopefully, our players will appreciate and opportunity to play this esteemed golf course and enjoy themselves. Golf is just not the kind of game where you can predict the weather,” he added.
Nearly half the field were repeaters to a Member Golf Day, in which a golfer receives greens fee, cart, brunch post-golf reception and prizes at an exclusive venue for $125.
“We were very excited to play Upper Montclair,” said Joan Boillod, the president of Warrenbrook Golf Course who also plays at Rutgers. Her foursome included repeat players Doris Schumacher and Lavinia Ruby and newcomer Judy Winter.
“I used to come here and watch LPGA events here. It’s a beautiful old, traditional course. It’s nice to have the opportunity to play at a course where you were once a spectator for great golfers,” Boillod added.
