Kozubal Leads NJSGA/NJPGA Senior Open Following First Round

FARMINGDALE, N.J. – Through 18 holes of play at Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club, Peter Kozubal leads the 33rd NJSGA/NJPGA Senior Open by one stroke, after firing a 5-under 66 on Tuesday afternoon.

“I drove the ball well and hit a lot of fairways,” Kozubal explained. “My speed and the putting on the greens was great today. I made a couple of saves for pars, and my lag putts had less than a foot. It was great, stress-free.”

Nine players turned in scorecards of par or better.

Kozubal shot a 3-under 32 on the back nine, highlighted by an eagle on 17 and a birdie on 18. For the day, Kozubal went 4-under on the par-5s.

In 2019, Kozubal won the NJSGA Pre-Senior Championship at Metuchen Golf & Country Club. He also won the 2015 NJSGA Men’s Public Links Championship.

“Being in that position, you want to finish strong,” he said. “You try not to mess anything up along the way. It was good finishing with a birdie on the last hole."

The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Gregory Baker of Rockaway River shot a 4-under 67, while Frank Esposito of Forsgate finished with a 3-under 68 to sit in third.

“Do what I did today, hopefully,” Kozubal said when asked about Wednesday’s game plan. “Try to keep the nerves in check. I've won two other state tournaments, so hopefully feed off of that, and do what I did today. It'll be great, no matter what happens.”
