John Murray, Former NJSGA President, Inducted Into Newark Hall Of Fame

John B. Murray, former president of the New Jersey State Golf Association (2010-11), received an accolade recalling his standout sports career at Seton Hall Prep and Notre Dame University when he was inducted into the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame on October 25 at the 24th annual awards dinner at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark.
Murray, who has been a trustee of the NJSGA since 1998 and is a former president of the Spring Lake Golf Club, was born and raised in Newark.
Following his graduation from Ivy Street Grammar School, John attended Seton Hall Prep and lettered in basketball and football. In basketball, he played on the 1958 Parochial North Jersey State Champions team.
As captain of the 1958 football team his senior year, he was named to the first team All-Essex County, All-State Parochial and Private, and All-North Jersey Parochial teams.
At Notre Dame, the 6-1, 210-pound Murray played end his junior and seniors years on the 1961 and 1962 teams and graduated from the South Bend school in 1963 with a degree in economics.In both seasons, the Fighting Irish defeated Oklahoma and in his senior year also defeated USC.
The next stop for Murray was the Georgetown University Law Center, from which he received a J.D. in 1966. In 1967, Murray received a Master of Law degree (taxation) from New York University.
Murray, admitted to the bar in both New Jersey and New York, has been a partner in the law firm of Connell Foley for more than 40 years. John and his wife, Ann, reside in Sea Girt and have seven children and 21 grandchildren.
Besides the NJSGA, Murray’s professional and civic activities include:
· Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Seton Hall Prep, since 1996; Board member since 1987
· Trustee N.J. Senior Golf Association since 2002 and president in 2010
· Trustee of Spring Lake Golf Club and twice president (1993-95, 1998-99)
Newark Athletic Hall of Fame members include Al Attles, Richie Reagan, Ray Dandridge, Lonnie Wright, Billy Conn, Marty Liguori , Mo Layton and Rick Cerone and many others.
