Huang Collects Medalist Honors for Second Time in 2022; Cards 68 at 102nd Open Qualifier
BOONTON, N.J. – Amateur William Huang finished as medalist in qualifying for the 102nd Open Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Knoll Country Club (West), shooting a 2-under par 68.
“I just kept it in play all day,” Huang reflected.
“You need to try to shoot the lowest score, medaling or not. It doesn’t really matter if you go out and play a good round that gives you confidence. By hitting the shots that you want to, making putts whenever you want to, that gives you confidence.”
Huang played a consistent game, carding four birdies and just two bogeys.
Coming off medalist honors at Quail Brook for the New Jersey Amateur, Huang, of Springdale Golf Club is looking to carry this momentum into the championship.
“Medaling or not, it doesn't really matter where I finished in the field. If I play good, it gives me confidence going to the next round.”
Gregory Baker, head golf professional at Rockaway River Country Club, home of the 2022 New Jersey Amateur Championship finished with a 1-under par 69 to finish atop of the professionals in the field.
The low 14 players (+ ties) have advanced to the championship at The Ridge at Back Brook from July 25-27, with the cut being 2-over par (72).
The final qualifier for the 102nd Open is set for Wednesday, June 29 at Roxiticus Golf Club. Pairings and starting times can be found here.
