With former champion Sherry Herman of Middletown leading the way, a contingent of six will take part in the 2015 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship that will be played this weekend on Saturday, Sept. 26, and Sunday, Sept. 27, at the 5,873-yard, par-72 Hillwood Country Club in Nashville, Tenn.
Also competing from New Jersey are Susan Sardi of Skillman, Alicia Kapheim of Pennington, Karen Hansard of Bernardsville, Adrienne MacLean of Basking Ridge and Donna McHugh of Montville.
The U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur consists of 36 holes of stroke play on Saturday and Sunday, after which the field will be reduced to the low 64 scorers. There will then be six rounds of match play, starting Sept. 28. The championship is scheduled to conclude with an 18-hole final on Thursday, Oct. 1.
Herman won the U.S. Senior Women’ Amateur in 2009 at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.
Herman took home the most significant title of her golf career. She won four of the first five holes on the second nine to take a 4-up lead and ultimately capture her first USGA championship.
“It’s surreal right now – it’s just surreal,” said Herman, who also won the North & South Senior Women’s Amateur earlier that year at age 51. “I wanted this so much. I stayed calm and wasn’t nervous. I was calm. I just think that helped a lot.
“It’s a dream come true and I don’t know how to react when a dream comes true. It’s just so hard and so I’m very grateful. I’m thrilled beyond words and I’m very proud of myself. I’m proud of my family for just hanging in there with me.”
In 2014, the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur took place at Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, N.J. Joan Higgins, of Glendora, Calif., defeated Judith Kyrinis, of Canada, 1 up, in the final match
Higgins, 58, became the third player to win both the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur and U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, a championship she captured in 2008. She joins World Golf Hall of Famer Carol Semple Thompson, who won four Senior Women’s Amateurs and two Women’s Mid-Amateurs, and Ellen Port, who captured the 2012 and 2013 Senior Women’s Amateur and four Women’s Mid-Amateurs.
