Granahan Claims 10th Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship; Match Play Bracket Set for Women's Amateur
PRINCETON, N.J. - Kate Granahan of Upper Montclair Country Club won the 10th New Jersey Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship on Tuesday after firing a 7-under par 65 en route to her second title.
"I've still got it,” Granahan reflected. “I had a lot of doubts this summer and it feels really good to win.”
On the way to her lowest round of her career, Granahan turned in a blemish-free round highlighted by seven birdies, including a 40-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Granahan, 29, has put in the work to her game, despite working full-time.
"I just have been able to acknowledge that I'm not 18 anymore and the training is not the same and the practice is not the same. When I do get a chance to practice, it's very focused,” Granahan said. “It's an hour or two that’s very, very focused, whether it's on putting my starting line or my landing areas for chipping or ball striking. I feel that I am quite a bit more focused now that I'm older and I know what I need to work on generally. There's less time and you just have to make-do with what you have.”
In the 98th Women’s Amateur Championship, the match play bracket is set. Earning the top seed, Madeleine Zang came from behind to earn medalist honors. The Springdale Golf Club product fired a 4-under par 68 on Monday and followed that up with a 3-under par 69 on Tuesday.
Her home course knowledge proved to be beneficial.
“I know the course really well,” Zang recalled. “I've been playing here since 2019, so I know the greens, I know where all the trouble is. It’s very familiar to me.”
With a group of Springdale members on hand, Madeleine and her sister Jacqueline both advanced to match play.
“Playing Springdale is always amazing,” expressed Madeleine. “I've played a couple of tournaments here, so it's always super fun and seeing a lot of members came out to watch – I'm really happy to see them out there cheering me on.”
Zang is set to face Emma Shen of Edgewood Country Club in the Round of 16.
2021 Women’s Amateur Champion, Ami Gianchandani and 2022 Women’s Amateur Champion Katie Lu each finished one stroke behind Zang.
Round of 16 matches will begin on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. Following the conclusion of the morning matches, quarterfinal action will get underway.
