Gianchandani Sets Pace at 98th Women’s Amateur Championship; Perrotta Leads Mid-Amateur

PRINCETON, N.J. - 2021 New Jersey Women’s Amateur Champion Ami Gianchandani leads the 98th New Jersey Women’s Amateur Championship after firing a 7-under par 65 on Monday morning.

She recorded a blemish-free round, highlighted by an eagle and five birdies.

“When I hit the turn, I didn’t realize I was that far under (4-under par),” Gianchandani reflected.  “After that, it was more about just continuing to hit good shots. Unfortunately a couple more lip outs than lip ins on the back nine, but still really solid golf all day.”

After missing the 2022 New Jersey Amateur due to competing in the U.S. Amateur, Gianchandani is eager to chase after the Championship trophy again.

“I'm disappointed I didn't get to defend my title last year, but definitely psyched to be playing with Katie (Lu), who won it last year,” said Gianchandani. “I think that helped today -- we were kind of feeding off each other and both shot 31 on the front. I’m not sure if any other group did that.”

2022 New Jersey Women’s Amateur Champion Katie Lu finished right behind Gianchandani, turning in a 5-under par 67. Lu tallied six birdies en route to beginning her title defense.

“It was mainly a wedge battle out there because Springdale isn't playing very long, so I just put myself in some good positions,” recalled Lu. “I rolled a few putts in and didn't make too many mistakes, only had one bogey so I'm just going to play my game and take it one shot at a time.”

Following the completion of the second round, a cut will be made with the low 16 players advancing to match play.

In the 10th Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, defending champion Samantha Perrotta turned in a 1-under par 70 on Monday and leads the contingent. A Mid-Amateur Champion will be determined following Tuesday’s stroke play round.
