Emily Odwin of Barbados Medals in U.S. Girls' Junior Qualifying at Hawk Pointe

WASHINGTON, NEW JERSEY – Seventeen-year-old Emily Odwin of Barbados endured a four-plus hour weather delay to fire a three-under-par 67 to win the medal in sectional qualifying today for the 2021 U.S. Girls Junior Championship at the par 70, 5,646 yard Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington, N.J.

Odwin's round was steady, if not spectacular. Her opening nine featured two birdies (on the par four sixth, and the par five seventh) and seven pars. "My putting worked today," stated Odwin. "My mom could tell you – before my round, I told her I was a bit worried about how my putting was going to work on these greens but it worked out really well for me and I felt comfortable on the greens after a few holes. My chipping was pretty good and I was hitting a lot of greens too, so that always helps with making pars." The momentum continued on the back nine, as Odwin fashioned eight pars and one birdie on the par three, sixteenth hole.

Under oppressively hot and humid conditions, the second qualifying position went to Angelina Kim of Tenafly who finished at two-under-par 68, while the third qualifier was Katie Li of Basking Ridge, who shot a one-under-par 69. Sydney Yermish of Wynnewood, Pa. earned the first alternate spot following a four-hole playoff, which ended in dramatic fashion after she went up-and-down for birdie from a bunker. Sydney Kuo of South Plainfield was second alternate. Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md., will host the 72nd U.S. Girls' Junior Championship July 12 through 17.
