Ellis, Broderick Earn Medalist Honors at Four-Ball Championship

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The duo of Stephen Ellis and Edmund Broderick combined for a 5-under 66 to claim medalist honors at the 89th New Jersey State Golf Association Four-Ball Championship at Galloway National Golf Club.

The pair opened Tuesday’s round with an even-par 35 on the front nine, before heating up on the back nine, registering three birdies and an eagle to close out play. Broderick, of Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club posted an eagle and two back-to-back birdies through the round, while Ellis, of Howell Park compiled two birdies, which came on holes 4 and 18.

“On the front, we both hit the ball pretty well, we just couldn't make any putts or get anything going. We saved a couple pars on 9 and 10, and then the putts started going in,” Broderick explained. “It kind of took off from there."

Three teams came up just one stroke short of medalist honors. Mark Benevento and Drue Nicholas of Galloway, Adam Cutler and Thomas Guy, Michael Brown and Peter Barron finished in a tie for second.

"I think we stayed pretty patient," Benevento said. "We knew that birdies were out there. We didn't really try to press. A couple putts started to fall, and we just got comfortable out there."

Following completion of stroke play, a playoff between five teams for four spots was played.
