Edgewood C.C. Hosts Successful Member Golf Day
Edgewood Country Club in River Edge was the site of an NJSGA Member Golf Day on Thursday, June 26, although the signage was a little off.
Everywhere, there were signs for “Red Oaks Country Club,” as Edgewood was also being used as a set for a television pilot for Amazon.com’s new broadcasting wing. Main stars of the pilot, Jennifer Gray and Paul Reiser, however, were nowhere in sight.
Instead, some 90 NJSGA members were on hand for a sparkling day of golf in Bergen County.
“We have a good balance of golfers here from Bergen County and other areas of the state,” said Rich Kennedy, NJSGA Director Handicapping and Member Services. “Edgewood is exactly the type of course where we should be hosting Member Golf Days. It is a hidden gem, a beautiful course that’s always in excellent shape.”
Among the participants was Alan Sefcik, a member of Copper Hill, who is on a quest to play all 238 full-sized courses in New Jersey. According to Sefcik’s calculations, there are 119 public and 119 private courses in the state.
“I’ve played all of the public courses and this gives me a chance to get on private courses that I can add to my list,” said Sefcik, 48, who works o=in human resources for L’Oreal. “I started wondering how many courses I had played on about five years ago. Member Golf Days are a great opportunity and a great event.”
Member Golf Days, which began with four events in 2011 and added a fifth in 2012, and a sixth in 2013, has jumped to 10 dates due to high demand at both classic and contemporary courses dotted throughout the state. The Member Golf Day season began on Monday, April 28, at Trump National-Philadelphia in Pine Hill and lasts until Tuesday, October 14 at Hidden Creek in Egg Harbor Township.
The other Member Golf Day outings are Monday, July 21 at The Ridge at Back Brook in Ringoes; Tuesday, August 5 at Rock Spring Club in West Orange; Monday, August 18 at Metedeconk National G.C. in Jackson; Wednesday September 17 at Copper Hill C.C. in Ringoes and Wednesday, September 24 at Shackamaxon C.C. in Scotch Plains.
The NJSGA will allow members to register on three dates. Registration is available now for Rock Spring. Ridge @ Back Brook and Metedeconk National are sold out. On July 1, registration opens for the final three Member Golf Days at Copper Hill, Shackamaxon and Hidden Creek.
“I think Member Golf Days are fantastic,” said repeat player Sal Leto. “They are affordable and at courses you could never have an opportunity to play these courses unless you knew a member. The food is good, too.”
“I’ve played at Crestmont and last week at Rumson,” said Victor Joo. “Member Golf Days are well organized and you meet a lot of people. I like playing under rules and competing. It’s a great value.”
“I want to play in as many Member Golf Days as possible,” said Debbie Cummins, a member at Trump National in Bedminster.
