Echo Lake Is Host For NJSGA Member Golf Day

Ninety-two players descended for another New Jersey State Golf Association Member Golf Day at esteemed Echo Lake County Club in Westfield on Monday, July 18.

In the six years since Member Golf Days were instituted by the NJSGA, the popularity has grown immensely.

“We’re seeing more and more participation,” said Rich Kennedy, NJSGA Director of Handicapping and Member Services. “We encourage those who want to play in Member Golf Days to register, even if there is a waiting list. At times, we add a second shotgun tee time to accommodate as many golfers as possible.

“The tournaments are filling faster. It’s a special opportunity to play courses like this one, an old Donald Ross-designed venue.

“We’d also like to thank and clubs and courses that open up their doors with enthusiasm for the great exposure they are getting when NJSGA members come to play their courses,” Kennedy added.

Bob Stox of East Hanover said he was playing his fourth Member Golf Day event in four years and he’s already booked for more this year.

“It’s fun, it’s a good atmosphere and I like meeting people at these events. For $130, you get greens fee, lunch, hors d’oeuvres, and prizes. I always make room in my schedule to play,” said Stox, a programmer. “I now know that if you procrastinate and don’t register right away, you can get miss an opportunity. This is a great thing the NJSGA does for its membership.”

At Echo Lake, the competition was individual stroke-play net with Stableford scoring.

The Granstrand family of Westfield, who normally play at Ash Brook Golf Course, were out in force including dad Brian and sons Peter, Robby and Luke.

“It’s a great chance to get the family together and a chance to make sure I have the day off,” said Brian Granstrand.

“I like playing new courses, ones you would not normally get a chance to play,” said Luke Granstrand, 26.

Jane Ryan has played Echo Lake before but convinced friend Paula Morgan she should jump at the opportunity.

“My friends at Galloping Hill Golf Course told me about Member Golf Days. Echo Lake is a very fair course and it’s a beautiful course,” said Ryan, who carded back-to-back net aces on the final two holes. Getting two strokes per hole, she naturally parred the par-3 125-yard No. 17 hole, and chipped in from 105 yards for a net one at the par 4 No. 18 hole.

“I’m excited about playing here. And I’ve also heard great things about Roxiticus, which will will play at a Member Golf Day (August 10),” Morgan said.

The rest of the Member Golf Day schedule: July 25, Cherry Valley; August 2, Morris County Golf Club; August 10, Roxiticus; August 15, ridge at Back Brook; Sept. 27, Eagle Oaks in Farmingdale; Oct. 4, Riverton.
