The 10th annual East Coast Evans Scholars Classic was held June 25, at Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington, N.J. Over 100 Evans Scholars Alumni and friends of the program attended, helping raise $58,000 for the Evans Scholars Foundation. Since the event began in 2003, it has raised $315,000.
The WGA partners with the New Jersey State Golf Association to help fund scholarships for deserving candidates from New Jersey.
"The 10th Annual East Coast Evans Scholars Classic was a great success due to the generous support of the Founders Circle members, New Jersey State Golf Association, and the Evans Scholar alumni living in New Jersey," says Tom Paluck, NJSGA Committee Member.
To date, the Evans Scholars Foundation has granted one caddie from New Jersey a full scholarship for tuition and housing. In addition to maintaining good grades in a rigorous computer engineering curriculum, Sean Thornton, who graduated from the University of Michigan in May, made it a priority to dedicate himself to extracurricular activities and philanthropy. In a thank-you note to the Evans Scholars Foundation, Thornton wrote, "Without Evans Scholars, my life right now would not be open to such an immense amount of opportunity."
Through the Evans Scholars Foundation, Thornton has learned to strive for goals at the academic level, but also toward becoming a leader, promoting involvement and cooperation among others. He wrote, "Without the Evans Scholars Foundation I would never have been given the opportunity to become the sole recipient from New Jersey to earn one of the most illustrious scholarships in the nation."
