Delbarton's Voetsch Wins Toc; Bergen Catholic Team Champion
Senior Will Voetsch of Delbarton, whose brother John finished T-11 at the 2014 NJSGA State Amateur, won the 2015 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association boys' championship by one stroke at the Tournament of Champions on Monday, May 18, at the par-72, 6,612-yard Hopewell Valley Golf Club in Hopewell.
Voetsch was one shot better than Chris Gotterup of Christian Brothers and two shots better than Dylan Stein of Hunterdon Central.
Bergen Catholic took the team championship for the second year in a row behind Drake Ferriter (75), Brandon Kim (76), Jimmy Criscione (77) and George Cultaro (77). Trailing Bergen Catholic (305) were Christian Brothers (313) and Oratory Prep (319).
Other team champions included Hunterdon Central in Group 4, Northern Highlands in Group 3, Rumson in Group 2, Pascack Hills in Group 1, Bergen Catholic in non-Public A, and Oratory in Non-Public B.
The event is co-sponsored by the NJSGA.
“I figured 68 or 69 would be the number and that you would have to shoot under par to win today,” said Voetsch, who last week was one of four to advance through the U.S. Open local qualifier at Canoe Brook.
“My game plan was to hit the fairways and stay patient. I only missed one or two fairways and had a lot of birdies out there,” said Voetsch, who recorded five birdies – three on the par 5s – and two bogeys. Voetsch will attend Rice University in Texas next fall.
“This is a great win for Bergen Catholic,” said veteran coach Jim Jacobsen, the winningest coach in state scholastic golf annals. In 33 seasons, Jacobsen has surpassed 900 victories and won seven state championships.
