MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Chris Gotterup of Little Silver won the Inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic on Sunday, May 12 at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. In his 27th start on the TOUR, he won by a six stroke margin, the largest margin of victory on the TOUR this year.
"It definitely hasn't sunk in yet," Gotterup said following his first PGA TOUR victory. "I just want to thank everyone this week for the support. What a great first event. I'm sure it's a big success for Visit Myrtle Beach. Honored to be the champion and couldn't have gone any better."
With the win, Gotterup clinches a spot in the PGA Championship next week at Valhalla Golf Club.
Going into the final round, Gotterup owned a four stroke lead. His final round started off rocky, etching a bogey on the first two holes. He turned things around carding, two birdies and an eagle over the next three holes. He went on to finish Sunday at 4-under par and 22-under par for the tournament.
"Obviously this is a big notch on the belt, but I feel like I have a lot of room to improve, as well, which is the fun part about it," Gotterup added. "Obviously I played great this week and grinded it out, but me and A.J. (his caddie) out there, we were talking about things that we can get better at while we're playing, which is the fun part. I think you kind of just take it week by week or try to, at least, and see what you can do with it."
Gotterup won the 2019 New Jersey Open Championship and was 2019 New Jersey State Golf Association Player of the Year.
