Calve Claims 89th Public Links Championship

NESHANIC STATION, N.J. – Ricky Calve captured the 89th Public Links Championship at Neshanic Valley Golf Course on Wednesday. Calve, 21, carded an eight-under par, 136 over the 36-hole championship to win the title.

After a solid round of three-under par, 69, in the morning put Calve in position, a five-under par round of 67 in the afternoon sealed the championship for the Oceanport-native. In total, Calve made 10 birdies on the afternoon while limiting the mistakes to a minimum.

“I was just sticking to my gameplan and trying to hit fairways,” Calve said. “From there it was fairway, to the middle of the green and two putt or make the birdie putt.”

The blemish-free second round from Calve comes on the heels of his medalist performance at the Colts Neck GC qualifier for this championship just over a week ago.

“I’ve been playing pretty good golf lately. I’ve been able to take away the right side of the course so that’s been helping me,” Calve said. “I don’t think I’m hitting the ball any better than normal, but everything has just been pretty solid.”

Calve, along with Paul Giovannoli and Gavin Rau, will all earn exemptions into the 123rd Amateur Championship next summer.

“At the qualifier for this event I said I was trying to get some exemptions for next season,” Calve said. “There’s definitely less to worry about for next year so that’s good.”
