Blumenfeld Repeats as Champion; Wins 12th Super-Senior Championship Presented by NJM Insurance Group
WATCHUNG, N.J. – For the second-straight year, Jay Blumenfeld came out victorious in the Super-Senior Championship presented by NJM Insurance Group. Blumenfeld, 70, carded a 1-over par 73 and then outlasted David Weiniger in a three-hole playoff to win the 12th edition of the championship.
Blumenfeld started on hole No. 9 in the shotgun start and came out hot with a birdie on the tough par 3. He then remained consistent, collecting six pars before an impressive 16th hole, carding a birdie.
“It was a miracle putt,” said Blumenfeld of the 16th hole where he sank a long birdie putt to sit at 2-under through 8 holes. “I limped on 17 and 18, which was my 9th and 10th hole actually,” Blumefeld recalled.
Overall, Blumenfeld finished with four bogeys and three birdies total. He would then go on to meet longtime friend Weiniger in a playoff after they both tied after 18 holes of action.
“David told me all week that he’d see me in a playoff this week,” said Blumenfeld.
The pair, who have known each other for more than 40 years through Mountain Ridge Country Club battled for three extra holes.
“I really would’ve been happy if he won too, but it’s not like I wasn’t trying,” said Blumenfeld.
Blumenfeld was able to finally secure the win after a birdie on the third playoff hole.
“It’s nice to be a repeat winner and defend this, I get to keep the trophy for another year I guess.” Blumenfeld reflected on his win, “I’m very happy, especially on my wife’s 68th birthday today.”
