Betty Lou Mccabe, Wife Of Ex-njsga President, Passes Away At 86

Betty Lou McCabe, a long-time member of Baltusrol Golf Club and the Women’s New Jersey Golf Association, passed away at age 86 on Saturday, March 8.

Betty Lou and her late husband, Joe, were also great supporters of the New Jersey State Golf Association. In recognition of this commitment, the net trophy in the NJSGA Mixed Pinehurst Championship was donated by the McCabes and is named in their honor. Joe was a former NJSGA president (1970-71) and a long-time NJSGA Board of Trustees member.

Betty Lou was a member of Baltusrol, Coral Ridge Country Club, Farmington Country Club and The Lauderdale Yacht Club. She was also a member of the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association as well as the WNJGA.

Betty Lou joined the WNJGA in 1969 and was recognized with Emerita membership status in 2010. She was an ardent supporter of the association throughout her tenure. She was especially dedicated to our outreach to junior girls through our annual golf tournament conducted by her daughter, Sissy, and Penny Barth.

Betty Lou loved being a member of the WNJGA and its rich history and traditions. She was particularly proud when Sissy was elected to membership in 1997.

Betty Lou also enjoyed success on the golf course, particularly at Baltusrol where she won a club championship. The McCabe Bowl is presented annually to the winners of Baltusrol’s Mother/Daughter competition and recognizes Betty Lou’s support of family golf.

After stepping down as NJSGA president, Joe McCabe continued to serve the association as a trustee of the Caddie Scholarship Foundation. Shortly after the passing of Joe McCabe in 1997, the family set up caddie scholarships for one boy and one girl at Rutgers University.

A viewing will be held at Bradley Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Avenue, Springfield, on Friday, March 14 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, March 15 at 10:30 at Christ Church, 55 Highland Avenue, Short Hills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Jersey State Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund, 3 Golf Drive, Suite 206, Kenilworth, NJ 07033.
