“I actually didn’t putt that well,” Pierson reflected. “I hit the ball close to a few holes on the front and had some confidence that I could hit it close and left myself in good spots. If I missed a green, I was just off the green, so didn’t really get myself into any trouble which, didn't have a lot of bogeys, obviously 3 putt coming in but, it was fun.”

Pierson, who is new to the Garden State will compete in his first New Jersey Open.

“I’m excited to play and excited to learn a little bit more about the course, but I realized if I didn’t get through today that didn’t matter. So I focused on today and now we’ll focus on that moving forward.”

Anthony King, assistant golf professional at Liberty National Golf Club finished with a 2-under par 68 on the 6,727 yard course.

The low six players (+ ties) have advanced to the championship, which will be contested at The Ridge at Back Brook from July 25-27.

The next qualifier for the Open is set for Tuesday, June 21 at White Beeches Golf & Country Club. Pairings and starting times can be found here.
