Asselta, 13, fired an impressive seven-under par, 65 which was highlighted by an eagle and six birdies to lead the group of 14 and under boys.

“I was putting really well,” Asselta said. “I was putting balls on the green and giving myself good looks at birdie.”

After two pars to start the day, Asselta made eagle on the par five, 3rd hole giving him confidence to kickstart his low round.

“I started off with a good par on hole one, had to scramble on hole two for a par and hole three just got it all started for me,” Asselta said.

Asselta’s lone blemish on Wednesday came with a bogey on the 10th hole which was quickly erased by making birdie on each of the following three holes.

“I just knew I was still having a good round either way, so I just tried to keep it going and go even lower,” Asselta said.

The boys’ leader will tee off at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday alongside Aaron Koo and Eric Kim, who carded a one-under par, 71 and a two-over par 74, respectively on Wednesday.

On the junior girls’ side, Angelina Kim paced the field with a three-under par, 69. Kim caught fire down the stretch firing four consecutive birdies from the 11th through the 14th holes.

“On the front nine, I wasn’t able to figure out the greens, but towards the back nine I got used to the green speeds and some putts were dropping,” Kim said. “I had some nice momentum going on. My putts were going in and my drives were going straight so those four birdies were pretty nice.”

Skylar Lee carded her first ever hole-in-one, picking up the ace on the par three, 8th hole to help secure her spot within the top-eight.
