Long-time current New Jersey State Golf Association volunteer Walter Sartorius has been named the 2024 Honey Gantner Award recipient, presented annually to a NJSGA volunteer that displays exemplary service and commitment to the association.

“It's an honor to be considered for the Honey Gantner Award, much less win it,” expressed Sartorius. “When I started volunteering with the NJSGA in 2015, it was primarily to learn the rules, and I did not really appreciate all that NJSGA contributes to golf in NJ. My focus shifted from just learning the rules to volunteering as much as possible to help at tournaments. Over time, I was fortunate enough to become involved on both the Board and Tournament Committee. Volunteering has allowed me to meet an amazing number of great people throughout the state, which I certainly intend to continue in the future.”

Sartorius, a mainstay at NJSGA tournaments has dedicated nearly 10 years of service to the organization. Having achieved expert level status through the United States Golf Association (USGA) rules exams, Sartorius has been requested to officiate as several highly toured collegiate and regional amateur events. For the NJSGA, Sartorius volunteers as an official at nearly every competitive event.

“Walt has been a fixture around NJSGA for years,” said NJSGA President Rod McRae. “He's tirelessly officiated hundreds of our events over the years in every kind of weather imaginable. He further dedicated his time and expertise to organize and educate our entire group of rules officials as well as members on the rule changes we’ve seen over the years. The NJSGA cannot operate without the time and expertise of our volunteers and Walt is the definition of a dedicated volunteer and a deserving recipient of this award.”

As an expert rules official, Sartorius has created and led rules education sessions for all NJSGA volunteers. In the off season, Sartorius conducts intensive rules sessions alongside several NJSGA rules officials – assisting in the development of the NJSGA volunteers. Sartorius also contributes to the New Jersey Golf Magazine, writing the Rules section in each issue.

Sartorius also serves on the NJSGA Board of Trustees, which is made up of a group of individuals representing member clubs and courses from around the state. These men and women provide direction and oversite to the NJSGA staff while setting a course for success. With his role on the board, Sartorius has earned the title of Tournament Committee Co-Chair, where he’s helped lead the improvement and experience for NJSGA tournament participants.
