Oberparleiter Sets Pace at 2nd Women’s Open Championship
TENAFLY, N.J. - Brooke Oberparleiter, an amateur from Laurel Springs, New Jersey, fired a 4-under par 68 to lead the 2nd Women’s Open Championship at Knickerbocker Country Club on Monday, August 12.
Oberparleiter, a rising sophomore at the University of Kentucky, collected six birdies on the 6,055-yard course.
“I hit it in the right spots, hit a lot of greens and then rolled them really good today,” Oberparleiter reflected.
Despite a downpour that spanned her final stretch of holes, Oberparleiter, 19, closed out her round on a high note.
“I buckled down, made some birdies when it was raining. I stayed focused and just kept playing my game.”
Anushka Sawant finished behind Oberparleiter at 2-under par.
Sawant, an amateur from Monmouth Junction credits her solid round to her consistent putting performance on Monday.
“My short game was definitely strong today, which really helped me,” said Sawant.
Sawant looks to remain poised and take in the moment before she begins her collegiate career at the University of Delaware.
“I’m going to continue my momentum tomorrow by not taking all my shots too seriously," Sawant added. “It’s my last tournament before college and I want to make sure I have fun.”
Christina Parsells, the 11th Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, turned in a 1-under par in the opening round and is looking for her third NJSGA title.
“The pressure comes from my short game,” Parsells said. “Seeing my short game perform under pressure at Watchung Valley definitely helped bring some momentum here.”
Alison Walshe and Lauren Peter lead the professional field at even par, 72. Defending champion Meaghan Francella finished at 4-over par 76.
The final round will begin Tuesday at 8:00 am.
